Since it's so cold outside ..here is something to warm you up! It's modified a little from a McDougall cookbook. Place all the ingredients on a large soup pot. Cover and cook over low heat for about 1 hour. This soup is easy to reheat and it freezes well. You can substitute brown rice for the barley if you wish.
